How Small Businesses Actually Get Found on Google?

Forget SEO jargon. Here’s the short list of things that genuinely move the needle for a local business.

SEO has a reputation for being complicated and expensive. For a small local business, most of it comes down to a handful of unglamorous basics done properly.

Claim your Google Business Profile

This is the single highest-impact free thing you can do. Fill in every field: services, hours, photos, service area. Businesses with complete profiles and recent reviews dominate the local map results — often above the actual websites.

Say where you are and what you do — in words

Google can’t rank you for “wedding photographer in Leeds” if those words never appear on your site. Put your service and location in your page titles, headings, and opening paragraphs. Naturally, not robotically.

Ask for reviews, consistently

Reviews are the modern word of mouth, and they directly influence local rankings. Make it a habit: after every good job, send the review link. Ten genuine reviews beat one hundred visitors who bounce.

One page per service

If you offer three services, give each its own page with its own title. A single “Services” page listing everything means you rank properly for nothing.

Speed and mobile still matter

A slow site doesn’t just annoy visitors — Google demotes it. Compress your images and test your site on your own phone using mobile data, not office Wi-Fi.

What you can safely ignore (for now)

Daily blogging, keyword-density tools, and anyone cold-emailing you about “page one guaranteed.” None of it matters until the basics above are in place.

Do these five things and you’ll outrank most local competitors, because most of them haven’t bothered. If you’d like help figuring out where your site stands, book a free consultation.
